Pat Freiermuth attended the Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts. He played tight end and linebacker in high school. During his career, he had 1,531 total yards and 24 total touchdowns. He committed to Penn State University to play college football. Freiermuth also played basketball in high school.
As a true freshman at Penn State in 2018, Freiermuth played in 13 games and made nine starts. He had 26 receptions for 368 yards and eight touchdowns. He remained the starter his sophomore year in 2019, and was Second Team All Big Ten.
