Carlos was a three star recruit in the 2016 class. He went to Northside High School in Roanoke, Virginia. He had offers from Cincinnati and Old Dominion, but chose to attend Wake Forest University.
As a freshman in 2017 he played in 11 games, and over 42 games he had 173 tackles (35.5 for a loss), 19.5 sacks, 8 PD, 7 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries. He was a First Team All-ACC member in 2019, and a Third Team All-ACC member in 2020.
